Vocal Ranges

by
Michael Dean
SFA Assistant Director of Choral Activities

The ranges listed below are good basic ranges to consider when you are classifying voices or picking music.  There are always singers who differ from these standardized ranges but these will be accurate across the range of singers.

Remember that the full range is possible but not for all singers.  The best range is the range that most singers will be able to sing most of the time.  The more you keep your music within the best range, the less problems you will face during rehearsals and performance.  However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't ever go beyond it, just be prepared when you do.
