by
Sherri Johnson

Category:  Language Arts
Grade Level:  1st Grade
Objective:

Language Arts TEKS 1.21A  Writing/grammar/usage.
The student composes meaningful texts by applying knowledge of grammar and usage.  The student is expected to use nouns and verbs in sentences.

Music TEKS 1.6A  Response/evaluation.
The student responds to and evaluates music and musical performance.  The student is expected to: distinguish between beat/rhythm, higher/lower, louder/softer, faster/slower, and same/different in musical performances.

Behavioral Objective:
The student will participate in writing about the story Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, and use the nouns from the story in sentences.

Materials:
Book – Cronin, Doreen. Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type. New York: Scholastic, 2000
Paper, pencils, markers, and white board.

Activities:
I will introduce the lesson by reading the story to the children.  Then we will talk about the story together, and talk about what a noun is and what nouns where used in the book. I  will write all the nouns on the board that they give me from the book.  For example: 1. Typewriter, 2. Farmer, 3. Cow.  Then the children will compose the story in their own words using the nouns that are on the board.

Process:

  • Say the words as a class.

  • Divide class into three sections.  Assign a different word to each group.

  • Say the words in the three groups starting with the one syllable word. Layer all three words.

  • Add body percussion.

  • Drop words, body percussion alone.

High Typewriter Clap
Middle Farmer Pat
Low Cow Stomp

Evaluation:
I will look at the children’s writing to see if they composed meaningful texts and they understood what a noun was.  I will also observe to see if the children can tell the difference between faster and slower tempo and whether they were clapping, patting, and stomping.
