Category:  Language Arts
Grade Level:  1st Grade
Objective:

Language Arts TEKS 1.4B  Listening/speaking/communication.  The student communicates clearly by putting thoughts and feelings into spoken words.  The student is expected to: use vocabulary to describe clearly ideas, feelings, and experiences.

Music TEKS 1.6A  Response/Evaluation.
The student responds to and evaluates music and musical performance.  The student is expected to: distinguish between beat/rhythm, higher/lower, louder/softer, faster/slower, and same/different in musical performances.

Behavioral Objective:
Students will describe, using vocabulary words, ideas that relate to birthdays/birthday parties.

Materials:
Construction paper and crayons, chalk and chalkboard

Activities:
Instruct students as they receive their construction paper and crayons, they are to draw a picture of an object that reminds them of either a birthday or a birthday party.  After drawing the picture they must write the name of the object next to the drawing.  Once all students have completed the assignment, students will share with the rest of the class
their drawing.  After all students have shared their drawing, as a class, we will select the most popular three, and write them on the chalkboard.  For example: (1)presents (2) cake (3) confetti.

Process:

  • Say the words as a class.

  • Divide the class into three sections.  Assign a different word to each group.

  • Say the words in the three groups starting with the one syllable word.  Layer all three words.

  • Add body percussion.

  • Drop words, body percussion alone.

High Confetti Clap
Middle Presents Pat
Low Cake Stomp

Evaluation:
Observe the students, making sure that each student describes an image of what reminds them of a birthday or birthday party, and making sure that the name of their image is next to their drawing.   Also make sure that students can identify higher/lower, louder/softer, faster/slower, and same/different in musical performances.
