Baa, Baa Black Sheep
Baa, baa
black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.
One for my master.
One for my dame.
But none for the little boy,
Who cries in the lane. |
Activities:
Introduce the lesson by asking children what they do when they come to a
word they do not know. Hold a short class discussion on ways to figure
out the meanings of words and the importance of building your vocabulary.
Have the students choral read Baa, Baa Black Sheep from the poster
board. Have the children pick words from the nursery rhyme which are
unfamiliar and write what they think the meaning is on their dry erase
board. As a class discuss meanings of the words. Have the
students return to their small groups and come up with a short skit to
remember the meaning of the word. Have the students perform their word
in front of the class. Have the students select one word which is
unfamiliar to serve as a steady beat. Then, have the students select a
phrase or group of words from the rhyme. Also, have the students come
up with a word which could be used in place of the unfamiliar word they
chose. This word should not be located in the poem and should be a
familiar word so the students can remember the meaning of the unfamiliar
word. Have the groups share with the class. For instance, the
words may be (1) dame, (2) three bags full, (3) woman.

Evaluation:
I will observe students discussing vocabulary from the nursery rhyme.
Additionally the students will be given another rhyme to repeat this process
in a group of three. As an informal assessment, I will have the
students perform their end result to the class. I will conduct this
assessment with a check list.
