Objective:

Listening/speaking/culture.
The student listens and speaks appropriately to gain knowledge of
his/her own culture, the cultures of other, and the common elements of
cultures. The student is expected to compare language and oral
traditions (family stories) that reflect customs, regions, and cultures.
Music
TEKS K.4B
Response/evaluation.
The student responds to and evaluates music and musical performance.
The student is expected to: identify higher/lower, louder/softer,
faster/slower, and same/different in musical performances.
Behavioral Objective:
The students will compare their families, traditions, customs, and
culture with other students.
Materials:
Book: Bertrand, Diane Family/Familia. Piñata books: Houston, TX.
1999.
Markers and white board, or chalk and chalkboard.
Activities:
Start the lesson by introducing the book Family/Familia by Diane
Bertrand. Then talk about culture, and about customs that different
families have. Read the book and then ask questions about what their
families do to celebrate different holidays. Ask them if there is any
special things that their families do that might make them different from
other families. Use the white board or chalkboard and write down all
the different things that the students tell you about their families,
culture, or tradition. Then tell them to pick three words or phrases
from the list to make music with.
Process:

Say the words as a class.

Divide the class into three
sections. Assign a different word to each group.

Say the words in three groups
starting with the one syllable word.

Layer all three words.
-
Add body percussion.
-
Drop words, body percussion
alone.

Evaluation:
The students should have compared their families traditions, customs, and
culture with the other students in the class. They should have gained
some knowledge about each other and about the different families in the
class. Every child should have participated and talked with the class.
