Materials:
Book: Bertrand, Diane Family/Familia. Piñata books: Houston, TX. 1999.
Markers and white board, or chalk and chalkboard.

Activities:
Start the lesson by introducing the book Family/Familia by Diane Bertrand.  Then talk about culture, and about customs that different families have.  Read the book and then ask questions about what their families do to celebrate different holidays.  Ask them if there is any special things that their families do that might make them different from other families.  Use the white board or chalkboard and write down all the different things that the students tell you about their families, culture, or tradition.  Then tell them to pick three words or phrases from the list to make music with.

Process:

  • Say the words as a class.

  • Divide the class into three sections.  Assign a different word to each group.

  • Say the words in three groups starting with the one syllable word.

  • Layer all three words.

  • Add body percussion.

  • Drop words, body percussion alone.

High Piñata Clap
Middle Tooth Fairy Pat
Low Easter Bunny Stomp

Evaluation:
The students should have compared their families traditions, customs, and culture with the other students in the class.  They should have gained some knowledge about each other and about the different families in the class.  Every child should have participated and talked with the class.
