Dr. Jeffrey Jacobsen

Conducting Bibliography

by
Jeffrey Richard Jacobsen, D.M.A.
SFA Assistant Professor of Music
Director of Orchestral Activities
Bass

I have attended numerous workshops on conducting.  At one workshop, Dr. Marvin Rabin handed out his list of books that every conductor should have.  I purchased as many of those as I could find and started adding more books to his list.  In working with Dr. Rabin over the past five years, I have shared many of the book ideas with him and the following list is the result of that collaboration.  The books are listed in strict bibliographic order -- by author -- as it is difficult to predict what books you will need and in what order.  The topics run the gamut of music, from technique to interpretation, from terms to instrumentation, from theory to practice.  I hope you find a book that will help your understanding of your function on the podium as well as in the classroom.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
